Maheshwaramyces

Maheshwaramyces Hosag., in Hosagoudar, Archana & Dan, Indian Journal of Science and Technology 2(6): 12 (2009).

Index Fungorum number: IF 514161; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12276, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Foliicolous. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Hyphae partly superficial and partly immersed in the epidermis. Superficial hyphae brown, branched. Conidiogenous cells borne directly on the mycelial cells, globose. Conidia phragmosporous, one to many septate, brown, constricted at the septa. Thyriothecia mostly connate, elongated, dehisce longitudinally. Asci ovate, clavate, globose, bitunicate, 8-spored. Ascospores brown, 2-celled, constricted at the septum (adapted from Hosagoudar et al. 2009).

Type species: Maheshwaramyces pachygones Hosag., Archana & Dan

Notes: Maheshwaramyces is characterised by superficial and partly immersed brown hyphae, phragmosporous, one to many septate, brown conidia, connate, elongated thyriothecia, ovate, clavate, globose, bitunicate, octosporous asci and brown, two-celled ascospores. Maheshwaramyces resembles genera in Asterinaceae in producing tretic conidia from conidiogenous cells borne directly on the mycelium. Maheshwaramyces is also similar to species in Lembosiaceae in having elongated thyriothecia that dehisce longitudinally (Hosagoudar et al. 2001, 2009). Maheshwaramyces differs from members of Lembosiaceae in producing tretic conidia from conidiogenous cells produced directly on the mycelial cells. Molecular data is lacking. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Maheshwaramyces in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Maheshwaramyces.
