Macowaniella
Macowaniella Doidge, Bothalia 1(1): 9 (1921).
Index Fungorum number: IF 2960; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12274, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Epiphytes. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia scattered to gregarious on substrate, ellipsoidal, black, carbonaceous, opening with a longitudinal fissure. Peridium difficult to differentiate. Hamathecium of wide, hyaline, numerous, branched pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, clavate or subglobose, apedicellate, thickened at the apex, with ocular chamber. Ascospores overlapping 2–4-seriate, strongly constricted at septum, hyaline or pale grayish when immature, becoming brown at maturity. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hongsanan et al. 2014).
Type species: Macowaniella congesta (G. Winter) Doidge
Notes: Macowaniella congesta was previously known as Lembosia congesta but was not congeneric with the type species of Lembosia, L. tenella. Macowaniella is characterised by scattered to gregarious, ellipsoidal, black, carbonaceous thyriothecia, clavate or subglobose, apedicellate asci and hyaline or pale greyish ascospores. Macowaniella resembles Lembosia in having carbonaceous thyriothecia, opening with a longitudinal fissure but differs in other morphological characters. Hongsanan et al. (2014) provided an updated description of Macowaniella based on a specimen from Florida on a different host family (BPI 647293). It appears as though the holotype specimen is lost. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Macowaniella. Macowaniella needs epitypification.
