Lucidascocarpa
Lucidascocarpa A. Ferrer, Raja & Shearer, Mycologia 100(4): 642 (2008).
Index Fungorum number: IF 508169; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00130, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata white, superficial or immersed, scattered or clustered, venter globose to subglobose. Neck long, cylindrical, white, periphysate. Peridium membranous, composed of 5–7 elongated, thin-walled, hyaline cells; tissue of textura angularis in surface view. Pseudoparaphyses absent. Asci fissitunicate, clavate, pedicellate, with gelatinous material around the apex of the endoascus, containing eight overlapping, 2-seriateascospores. Ascospores ellipsoidal to fusiform, 7-septate, hyaline, multi guttulate, verruculose, surrounded by a large gelatinous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Ferrer et al. 2008).
Type species: Lucidascocarpa pulchella A. Ferrer, Raja & Shearer
Notes: Lucidascocarpa is characterised by white, superficial or immersed, scattered or clustered ascomata, clavate, pedicellate asci, and ellipsoidal to fusiform, 7-septate, hyaline, multi-guttulate ascospores. Lucidascocarpa resembles Aliquandostipite in having translucent, light-colored fruiting bodies and septate ascospores enclosed in a wide gelatinous sheath (Inderbitzin et al. 2001, Ferrer et al. 2008). Lucidascocarpa is also similar to Hyalocrea in having light colored ascomata but differs in having ascomata with a long cylindrical neck while species of Hyalocrea have a short ostiole and lack hairs. Lucidascocarpa also has a centrum of the ascomata filled with several asci but members of Hyalocrea have few asci in one ascomata (Rossman 1987, Ferrer et al. 2008). Ferrer et al. (2008) reported that it might be possible that Lucidascocarpa has lost the capacity to form pigmented, thick-walled ascomata, pigmented ascospores or pseudoparaphyses which could lead to confusion regarding its systematic position. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010), and Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) listed Lucidascocarpa in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Lucidascocarpa.
