Lineolata
Lineolata Kohlm. & Volkm.-Kohlm., Mycol. Res. 94(5): 687 (1990).
Index Fungorum number: IF 25455; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12266, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata medium-sized, gregarious, immersed to erumpent, obpyriform, ostiolate, papillate. Peridium thin, comprising two types of cells; outer cells thick stratum pseudostromatic, inner stratum thin, composed of a few layers of hyaline cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium of dense, long trabeculate pseudoparaphyses, embedded in mucilage, anastomosing and septate. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical, with short pedicels, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores uniseriate to partially overlapping, ellipsoidal, dark brown, uniseptate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Kohlmeyer & Volkmann-Kohlmeyer 1990, Zhang et al. 2012).
Type species: Lineolata rhizophorae (Kohlm. & E. Kohlm.) Kohlm. & Volkm.-Kohlm.
Notes: Lineolata is characterised by gregarious, immersed to erumpent, obpyriform, ostiolate ascomata, cylindrical asci with short pedicels and ellipsoidal, dark brown, uniseptate ascospores. Lineolata rhizophorae was previously known as Didymosphaeria rhizophorae but was not congeneric with the type species of Didymosphaeria, D. epidermidis. Barr (1990a) assigned L. rhizophorae as Lojkania rhizophorae based on ascomatal and asci characters. Kohlmeyer and Volkmann Kohlmeyer (1990) re-examined L. rhizophorae and reported absence of clypeus, nearly superficial ascomata, colored peridium, a hamathecium with gelatinous matrix, asci with apical ring-like structure and ornamented ascospores, morphological features that differ from other genera in Didymosphaeriaceae. In the phylogenetic analysis of Suetrong et al. (2009) based on LSU, SSU, TEF-1 and RPB2, three isolates of L. rhizophorae from different geographic localities were closely related to Caryosporella rhizophorae in Dothideomycetidae and it was excluded from Pleosporales. More taxa with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Lineolata. Molecular markers available for Lineolata are ITS, LSU, SSU and RPB2.
