Kriegeriella

Kriegeriella Höhn., Annls mycol. 16(1/2): 39 (1918).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2592; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00544, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata small, solitary, scattered, superficial, subglobose, black, roughened, apex no obvious opening. Peridium thin, composed of a single type of lightly pigmented thin-walled cells. Hamathecium long cellular pseudoparaphyses, septate. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, obpyriform. Ascospores hyaline, turning brown when mature, multi-septate, constricted at each septum. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Höhnel 1918; Ariyawansa et al. 2015).

Type species: Kriegeriella mirabilis Höhn.

Notes: Kriegeriella is characterised by small, solitary, scattered, superficial ascomata, bitunicate, obpyriform asci and hyaline, multiseptate ascospores constricted at each septum. Höhnel (1918b) referred Kriegeriella to Microthyriaceae. Batista et al. (1959) assigned Kriegeriella to the subfamily of Aulographiodeae (Microthyriaceae). Luttrell (1973) referred Kriegeriella to Asterinaceae. Barr (1975) referred Kriegeriella to Pseudosphaeriaceae. Barr (1987b) introduced Kriegeriellaceae (Dothideales) to accommodate Kriegeriella and another genus Extrawettsteinina. Eriksson (2006) and Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2007, 2010) did not follow the treatment of Barr (1987b) and referred Kriegeriella under Pleosporaceae (Pleosporales). In their reappraisal of Microthyriaceae, Wu et al. (2011) did not accept Kriegeriella. Zhang et al. (2012) excluded Kriegeriella from Pleosporaceae since it is atypical of other members of Pleosporaceae. Zhang et al. (2012) postulated that Kriegeriella might belong to Microthyriaceae based on the thyriothecium-like ascomata and 5–6-septate ascospores. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) referred Kriegeriella to Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Molecular data are lacking for Kriegeriella. Fresh collections and DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the systematic position of Kriegeriella.
