Hyalocrea

Hyalocrea Syd. & P. Syd., Annls mycol. 15(3/4): 214 (1917).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2383; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12238; 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytic on plant leaves or fungicolous. Sexual morph: Stromata absent. Ascomata perithecial, superficial, aggregated, globose, hairy or setose with long flexuous hairs, white, coriaceous, ostiolate. Peridium composed of several parenchymatous cell layers of white to transparent cells of textura globulosa. Hamathecium comprising hyaline, filiform pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, oval to oblong, sessile, apex thickened. Ascospores globose, oblong to clavate, transverse multiseptate, non-constricted at the septum, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Type species: Hyalocrea epimyces Syd. & P. Syd.

Notes: Hyalocrea is characterised by superficial ascomata, parenchymatous peridium comprising textura globulosa, oval to oblong asci and oblong to clavate ascospores. The taxonomic placement of Hyalocrea is uncertain and is currently in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. In this study, we examined the type specimen of H. epimyces but it was in poor condition. We provide an illustration based on the original description.
