Heteroconium
Heteroconium Petr., Sydowia 3(1-6): 264 (1949).
Index Fungorum number: IF 8524; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11046, 20 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 5 species with molecular data.
Caespitules hypophyllous, without spots, effuse, inhabiting the entire surface of the leaf or a large part of it, dark olive-green. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium septate, repeatedly, reticulately branched. Conidiophores solitary, erect, straight or often curved, short, cylindrical, smooth, often slightly enlarged downwards. Conidiogenous cells terminal on conidiophores, monoblastic, holoblastic, sometimes percurrently proliferating (f, i). Conidia developing from distal end of conidiophores, catenate, oblong, ellipsoid or ovate-oblong, straight, rarely unequal, cylindrical, broadly rounded at both ends, or slightly tapering at distal end; becoming subclavate, subfusiform, straight or falcate, up to 7-septate, continuous or slightly constricted at septa, translucently dark or chestnut-brown, smooth (adapted from Petrak 1949).
Type species: Heteroconium citharexyli Petr.
Notes: Heteroconium is characterised by solitary, erect, straight or often curved conidiophores, and rarely, unequal, cylindrical conidia. Ellis (1971) and Morgan-Jones (1976) illustrated and described an isotype BPI (No. 443925) of H. citharexyli as did Hughes (2007). Members of Heteroconium are delineated based on the conidial septation and specific ecological niches. Molecular markers available for Heteroconium include H. chaetospira (SSU), H. citharexyli (LSU, ITS), H. eucalypti (ITS), H. kleinziense (ITS) and H. triticicola (ITS).
