Hansfordiella

Hansfordiella S. Hughes, Mycol. Pap. 47: 10 (1951).

Index Fungorum number: IF 8424; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12223, 7 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic or parasitic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium of subhyaline or brownish-hyphae, irregularly branched, with broad compositum. Conidiophores irregularly scattered, 1–5 aggregates, sessile or inflated in mycelial cells, broad, straight, pale brown, terminated with a cupuliform conidial scar. Conidia more or less obclavate, 5-celled, pale brown from the basal cell, and the apical cells are hyaline, straight, sharp, and composed of three central brown cells (adapted from Hughes 1951).

Type species: Hansfordiella asterinearum S. Hughes

Notes: Hansfordiella is characterised by subhyaline or brownish mycelium, irregularly scattered conidiophores, and more or less obclavate, 5-celled, pale brown conidia. Hughes (1951) suggested the placement of Hansfordiella in Microthyriaceae. Molecular data is lacking. Wijayawardene et al. (2017, 2020) and Kirk et al. (2013) referred Hansfordiella to Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Hansfordiella.
