Halokirschsteiniothelia

Halokirschsteiniothelia Boonmee & K.D. Hyde, in Boonmee et al., Mycologia 104(3): 705 (2012).

Index Fungorum number: IF 561017; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12221, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata erumpent to superficial, hemispherical to subglobose, scattered, with a small papillate ostiole. Pseudoparaphyses cellular, persistent, sparse, septate, branched. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, clavate, pedicellate, and with a small ocular chamber. Ascospores ellipsoid, pale brown, one-septate, the apices tending to be attenuated, constricted at the septum. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Boonmee et al. 2012).

Type species: Halokirschsteiniothelia maritima (Linder) Boonmee & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Halokirschsteiniothelia is characterised by erumpent to superficial, hemispherical to subglobose ascomata, 8-spored, bitunicate, clavate, pedicellate asci and ellipsoid, pale brown, one-septate ascospores. Kohlmeyer and Kohlmeyer (1971) first described H. maritima as Microthelia linderi. Halokirschsteiniothelia differs from Kirschsteiniothelia in having ostiolate ascomata and small ascospores with acute ends (Wang et al. 2004). The systematic placement of Halokirschsteiniothelia is still unclear. More taxa with DNA sequence data are needed to clarify its phylogenetic placement.
