Epibelonium E. Müll., Phytopath. Z. 47: 240 (1963).
Index Fungorum number: IF 1853; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12206, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Epiphytic on dead leaves of Quercus ilex. Sexual morph: Apothecia superficial, stalked, globose, reddish brown to dark brown, becoming black, scattered, solitary on upper surface of leaves, quadrilateral. Exciple angularis, brown to reddish brown. Asci 4-spored, bitunicate, clavate, cylindro-clavate, hyaline, apically rounded, with an ocular chamber, short-pedicellate. Hamathecium comprising numerous, filiform, hyaline, septate, hypha-like, straight or flexuous pseudoparaphyses, swollen and rounded at the base. Ascospores ellipsoid, hyaline, with transverse septa only, slightly constricted at the septa, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Doilom et al. 2018).
Type species: Epibelonium gaeumannii E. Müll.
Notes: Epibelonium is characterised by superficial, stalked, globose, reddish brown to dark brown apothecia, clavate, cylindro-clavate, hyaline asci, and ellipsoid, hyaline ascospores with transverse septa. Müller (1963) suggested the placement of Epibelonium in Schizothyriaceae. Arx and Müller (1975) transferred Epibelonium to Saccardiaceae due to tiny apothecia-like ascomata, and borne on superficial mycelium. Doilom et al. (2018) examined the type specimen of E. gaeumannii (ZT Myc 4388) and reported that the morphological characters of Epibelonium do not match those of Saccardiaceae. Doilom et al. (2018) suggested that Epibelonium might belong to Patellariaceae but they tentatively placed it in Dothideomycetes genera, incertae sedis. Fresh specimens with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Epibelonium.
