Description:
Saprobic on soft, decorticated woody material. Sexual morph: Ascomata 210–235 µm diam., 134–192 µm high immersed, globose to subglobose, black, coriaceous, ostiolate, short-papillate, easily detached from the substratum, solitary or gregarious. Peridium 5–11 µm thin, comprising 1 layer of relatively large, thin-walled, brown angular cells, arranged in a textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising 2–4 μm wide, dense pseudoparaphyses, unbranched between the asci, branching and anastomosing above the asci. Asci 57–72 µm × 7–11 µm (x̄ = 63.0 × 9.6 µm, n = 10), 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to sub-cylindrical, pedicellate, thick-walled, with an indistinct ocular chamber. Ascospores 12–16 µm × 4–6 µm (x̄ = 14.5 × 5.6 µm, n = 10), 1–2-seriate, oblong to ellipsoid, pale brown to olive brown, 1-septate, guttulate, smooth, each end with a sub hyaline with a broadly rounded germ pore. Importance and distribution
Didymopleella comprises two species. Didymopleella ammophila is known on culms of Ammophila arenaria (Poaceae) in Europe (Belgium) while D. cladii is reported from Cladium mariscus (Cyperaceae) in Europe (Denmark). One species Didymopleella thalictri has been transferred to Didymosphaeria.
