Index Fungorum number: IF 1195; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12173, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic or parasitic on the underside of Fern-fronds. Sexual morph: Pycnothecia lenticular superficial, black. Asci obovate, 8-spored. Paraphyses fasciculate. Ascospores unilocular, colored (adapted from Spegazzini 1921). Asexual morph: Fertile cells surrounded at the base with short obtuse hairs. Notes: Comesella is characterised by innate-superficial black pycnothecia which are more or less lenticular, very small, solitary or in very small groups, smooth, not shiny with obtuse whole edges, compact, coriaceous. Asci are short, obovate, subglobose, octosporous, paraphysate fasiculate. Ascospores are uniloculate and colored. The placement of Comesella within Dothideomycetes is uncertain and is treated in Dothideomycetes, genera incertae sedis. There are no recent studies on Comesella and its species. Sampling of fresh specimens and DNA sequence data are required to resolve its systematic placement.
