Coccochora quercicola

Coccochora quercicola (Henn.) Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. -naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 118: 1513 (1909).

Auerswaldia quercicola Henn., Hedwigia 43(2): 142 (1904).

Index Fungorum number: IF 431541; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12171, Fig. 1

Description:

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata 600–800 µm diam., 290–300 µm high, dark brown to black, stromatic, solitary, superficial to erumpent at maturity, subglobose, multilocular, thick-walled, glabrous. Ostiole absent, dehiscing by irregular breakdown of the overlapping host tissue. Conidiomatal wall 17–20 µm wide, composed of relatively thick-walled, pale brown to dark-brown cells of textura angularis. Conidiophores 8–15 µm wide arising from the inner layer cells of the conidiomata, reduced to conidiogenous cells or present, hyaline, short cylindrical, branched at the base, smooth-walled. Conidiogenous cells 2–6 × 2–5 µm, hyaline, annellidic, cylindrical to lageniform, mostly discrete, occasionally integrated, indeterminate, smooth walled. Conidia 2–5 × 3–5 µm (x̄ = 2.2 × 3.2 µm, n = 10), hyaline, ellipsoid to ovoid, aseptate, slightly smooth-walled.

Material examined: Japan, on dead leaves, 9 September 1940 (TNS: F 232146).

Coccochora kusanoi (Henn.) Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. -naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 119: 432 (1910).

Dothidella kusanoi Henn., Hedwigia 43(2): 143 (1904).

Index Fungorum number: IF 158913; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12172, Fig. 2

Description:

Saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata 220–250 µm diam., 90–100 µm high, solitary or scattered, immersed to semi-immersed, subglobose to subpyriform, brown or black, membranous, relatively large, coriaceous, flattened. Peridium 22–30 µm thick-walled, dark brown heavily pigmented cells. Hamathecium 4.2–5.5 µm of dense, very long, anastomosing and branching, cellular pseudo paraphyses. Asci 120–135 × 20–25 µm (x̄ = 128 × 24.4 µm), 8-spored, cylindrical to cylindro-clavate, short, narrow pedicellate, which are rounded at the base, apex with a wide ocular chamber. Ascospores 18–25 × 11–15 µm (x̄ = 21.3 × 14.2 µm, n = 10), obliquely uni-seriate and partially overlapping, ellipsoid, pale brown to dark brown, slightly granulated, with a sub hyaline appendage at one end without a sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Material examined: Kochi, Takaoka-gun, on dead leaves of Quercus glauca (Fagaceae), 9 June 1940 (TNS: F- 232139).

Importance and distribution

Coccochora comprises two species. Both Coccochora kusanoi and C. quercicola are known on leaves of Quercus sp. (Fagaceae) in Asia (Japan (Honshu)).
