Cirsosina
Cirsosina Bat. & J.L. Bezerra, Revta Biol., Lisb. 2(2): 132 (1960).
Index Fungorum number: IF 1067; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12164, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.
Foliar epiphyte on the upper surface of leaves, superficial mycelium present, sparse, hyphopodia absent. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia globose, ellipsoidal, or cylindrical, gregarious or some solitary, superficial, membranaceous, black-brown, lacking a well-developed basal peridium, opening by a longitudinal split, easily separated from the host; in section lenticular. Upper wall comprising parallel radiating lines of ellipsoid cells from the central ostiole to the outer rim. Peridium a single stratum composed of black-brown pseudoparenchymatous cells of compact textura angularis. Hamathecium of sparse asci, embedded in mucilage inclined towards the center, pseudoparaphyses not observed. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, spherical, broadly oblong, sessile. Ascospores rounded at the ends, brown when mature, 2-celled, with the upper cell wider than lower cell, smooth walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wu et al. 2011a).
Type species: Cirsosina rhododendri Bat. & J.L. Bezerra
Notes: Cirsosina is characterised by globose, ellipsoidal, or cylindrical thyriothecia, fissitunicate, spherical, broadly oblong, sessile asci and two-celled ascospores. Wu et al. (2011a) placed Cirsosina in Aulographaceae based on the superficial hyphae lacking hyphopodia and slit-like opening. Wu et al. (2011b) considered Lembosiella as an earlier name for Cirsosina. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) listed Cirsosina in Microthyriaceae. Wijayawardene et al. (2020) listed Cirsosina in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. The systematic position of Cirsosina is still uncertain. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Cirsosina.
