Calyptra cordobensis

Calyptra cordobensis (Speg.) Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 15(6): 478 (1918) [1917].

Description:

Parasitic on dead leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata 45–70 μm diam., 55–60 μm high, superficial, solitary, some in group, scattered, globose to sub globose, dark brown to black, mycelium appressed towards the base. Peridium 10–20 μm, composed of several layers of textura angularis. Hamathecium 2.5–3.5 μm comprising cellular pseudoparaphyses. Asci 19−21 × 12−16 µm (x̄ = 21.0 × 13.9 µm, n = 10), 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, subclavate-oblong, to clavate-subpyriforme, apex thickened, ocular chamber indistinct. Ascospores 10.5−11.5 × 3.0−4.6 µm (x̄ = 11.3 × 3.5 µm, n = 10), 2–3-seriate, narrowly obovoid to clavate, uniseptate, not constricted at the septum, upper cell wider, hyaline, guttulate, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown.

Importance and distribution

Calyptra comprises eight species known from living leaves of Asclepias cornuti (Apocynaceae), Heterothalamus brunioides (Asteraceae), Plumeria tricolor (Apocynaceae), Vitis caribaea (Vitaceae), in soil and from river. Calyptra is reported from Asia (Iraq), Central America (Costa Rica), Europe (Germany, Spain), South America (Brazil) and the United States (Hawaii, Iowa, North Carolina).
