Brachyconidiella

Brachyconidiella R.F. Castañeda & W.B. Kendr., Univ. Waterloo Biol. Ser. 33: 11 (1990).

Index Fungorum number: IF 5786; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12138, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Mycelium mostly immersed in the substrate, composed of septate, branched smooth walled, brown hyphae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata synnematal, scattered, erect, straight or somewhat flexuous, brown at the base to pale brown towards apex. No sporodochial conidiomata were observed by Castañeda and Kendrick (1990). Conidiophores unbranched or rarely branched, 1–3-septate, smooth, brown to pale brown at apex. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic or polyblastic, terminal, integrated, barrel-shaped, pale brown. Conidial secession schizolytic. Conidia cheirosporous, penicilliform, moniliform, branched (7–13) with chains composed of 3–8 cells, lower cells of branches more or less spherical, basal cells truncated, somewhat trapezoid, subhyaline (adapted from Castañeda and Kendrick 1990).

Type species: Brachyconidiella monilispora R.F. Castañeda & W.B. Kendr.

Notes: Brachyconidiella was introduced by Castañeda and Kendrick (1990) with B. monilispora as type species. Brachyconidiella is characterised by synnematal, scattered, erect, straight conidiomata, unbranched or rarely branched, 1–3-septate conidiophores, monoblastic or polyblastic conidiogenous cells and cheirosporous, penicilliform, moniliform conidia. Brachyconidiella resembles Brachyconidiellopsis in having similar conidiation. Brachyconidiella is also similar to Matsushimaea in having monoblastic conidiogenous cells and cheirosporous, constantly branched, moniliform conidia with schizolytic secession but differs in having brown conidia and lack of conidiophores (Subramanian 1978; Seifert et al. 2011). The generic placement of Brachyconidiella is obscure since no sequence data is available. Brachyconidiella is currently placed in Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Brachyconidiella.
