Pachythyrium

Pachythyrium G. Arnaud ex Spooner & P.M. Kirk, Mycol. Res. 94(2): 228 (1990).

Index Fungorum number: IF 25378; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06897, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Parasitic on Diatrypaceae. Sexual morph: Ascomata flat-turbinate, ostiolate, with radially arranged wall and upper and lower chambers. Asci bitunicate, 8-spored. Ascospores hyaline, uniseptate, setulate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Spooner & Kirk 1990).

Type species: Pachythyrium parasiticum (Fabre) G. Arnaud ex Spooner & P.M. Kirk

Notes: Pachythyrium is characterised by flat-turbinate, ostiolate ascomata, 8-spored asci and hyaline, uniseptate, setulate ascospores. Müller and Arx (1962) considered P. parasiticum as a synonym of Trichothyrina parasitica. Spooner and Kirk (1990) considered P. parasiticum as a distinct genus and thus validated Pachythyrium. Hawksworth et al. (1995) and Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) treated Pachythyrium as a member of Microthyriaceae. Wu et al. (2011b) referred Pachythyrium in Trichothyriaceae based on the features of the thyriothecia. The holotype material of P. parasiticum cannot be found hence Wu et al. (2011b) based his observations on a collection from the UK examined by Ellis (1977). Pachythyrium is morphologically a distinct genus in Trichothyriaceae but lacks molecular data. Fresh specimens with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
