Puttemansia

Puttemansia Henn., Hedwigia 41: 112 (1902).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4562; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00217, 16 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2021), molecular data unavailable.

Parasitic on lower surface of leaves of Nectandra sp. Sexual morph: Ascostromata up to 1 mm diam., superficial, solitary, sometimes in groups, pale yellow to vinaceous buff, stipitate, covered by hairy setae, white to hyaline, septate, multi-loculate. Locules globose-subglobose, slightly flattened at apex, non-ostiolate. Peridium composed of cells of textura prismatica to oblonga, hyaline to pale brown. Hamathecium comprising numerous filiform, branched, anastomosing, hyaline pseudoparaphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, oblong, elongate to cylindrical-clavate, rounded at apex, obtuse at base. Ascospores 1–2-seriate, fusiform, widest near central septum, tapering towards narrow ends, 3-septate, slightly constricted at septum, with continuous basal appendage, hyaline, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: hyphomycetous, staurosporous, Guelichia, Tetranacrium (Adapted from Hyde et al. 2011; Boonmee et al. 2014).

 Type species: Puttemansia lanosa Henn.

Notes: Puttemansia is characterised by hairy appendages and bright ascomata. Puttemansia was previously placed in Hypocreaceae, (Hypocreales) based on morphology (Clements & Shear 1931, Rogerson 1970). Rossman (1978) revised the generic concept of Puttemansia and reported that all species had bitunicate asci. Puttemansia resembles species of Podonectria and Tubeufia in Tubeufiaceae in having bright, fleshy ascomata, bitunicate asci and multiseptateascospores (Rossman 1978, Barr 1980). Rossman (1987) accepted six species in Tubeufiaceae, with Puttemansia lanosa as a synonym of P. albolanata (Speg.) Höhn. The asexual states of Puttemansia are reported to be in the hyphomycetous genera Guelichia Speg., Tetranacrium H.J. Huds. & B. Sutton and Titaea Sacc. (Hennings 1902, Petrak & Sydow 1936, Barr 1980, Rossman 1987, Hyde et al. 2011). Puttemansia is currently placed in Paranectriellaceae based on morphology (Boonmee et al. 2014b) but this needs confirmation with DNA sequence data.
