Stegasphaeria
Stegasphaeria Syd. & P. Syd., Annls mycol. 14(5): 362 (1916).
Index Fungorum number: IF 5190; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07875, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Spots distinct and numerous, with spiral or radially pattern on upper and lower side of leaf, yellow or yellowish-brown or greyish; stromata epiphyllous, black, shiny. Sexual morph: Ascomata densely gregarious, immersed, spherical, flattened-globose, erumpent through the upper epidermis, yellowish-brown. Ostiole with neck or opening with a pore. Peridium thin-walled, hyaline, composed of many layers of flattened cells of textura angularis. Asci 4–8-spored, generally cylindrical, with thickened apex and rounded base, short pedicelate, with hyaline pseudoparaphyses. Ascospores uniseriate, 2-celled, constricted at septum, broadly ellipsoidal, immature ascospores yellow or yellowish becoming blackish-brown when mature. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hyde et al. 2013).
Type species: Stegasphaeria pavonina Syd. & P. Syd.
Notes: Stegasphaeria is characterised by spherical, flattened-globose ascomata, cylindrical asci and broadly ellipsoidal ascospores. Sydow and Sydow (1916) introduced Stegasphaeriaceae to accommodate Stegasphaeria. Arx and Müller (1975) introduced Mesnieraceae with Mesniera rottlerae as type species. Stegasphaeriaceae was synonymized with Mesnieraceae. Stegasphaeria resembles Mesniera in having mature ascospores that are released through breakdown of the upper part of ascomata. Stegasphaeria is a distinct genus in Mesnieraceae but molecular data is lacking. Stegasphaeria is a poorly studied genus. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
