Bondiella

Bondiella Piroz., Mycol. Pap. 129: 6 (1972).

Index Fungorum number: IF 625; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07873, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary, immersed, subglobose, brown to dark brown, neck erumpent through the upper epidermis. Ostiole present, canal containing hyaline periphyses. Peridium thin-walled, comprising cells of textura angularis, fusing with host at the outside. Hamathecium comprising numerous, cylindrical, septate pseudoparaphyses. Asci 24-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, short-pedicellate, apically rounded, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores multi-seriate, ellipsoidal, reddish-brown, 2-celled, constricted at septum, surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Pirozynski 1972, Hyde et al. 2013).

 Type species: Bondiella palmicola Piroz.

Notes: Bondiella is characterised by solitary, immersed, subglobose, brown to dark brown ascomata, cylindrical to clavate, short-pedicellate asci and ellipsoidal, reddish-brown, two-celled ascospores. Barr (1987) placed Bondiella in Pleosporales, and postulated that the genus might be a member of Mesnieraceae but did not assign it to any family. Hyde (1996) re-examined the type species of Bondiella palmicola and confirmed it as a member of Mesnieraceae. Bondiella is a distinct genus in Mesnieraceae but this taxonomic placement needs to be confirmed by molecular data.
