Ronnigeria

Ronnigeria Petr., Sydowia 1(4–6): 310 (1947).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4782; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07972, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata irregular, dense, seldom loosely scattered, often in foci, subcuticular, very small, strongly depressed, rounded or broadly ellipsoidal, almost shield-shaped, initially closed, at maturity they are raised by a short, very irregular, simple or somewhat lobed rupture, often somewhat papilla-shaped. Ostiole filled with hyaline, pseudoparenchymatic internal tissue. Peridium evenly developed all around perithecia, translucent black-brown, consisting of textura angularis, above much larger and more irregular cells. Hamathecium extremely sparse, consisting of slimy mass, mostly only present at the base between the asci. Asci numerous, 8-spored, clubbed broad at the top, almost truncate rounded, coarse but rather thin-walled. Ascospores elongated, often club-like or spindle-shaped, mostly straight unicellular, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Petrak 1947).

Type species: Ronnigeria arctica (Oudem.) Petr.

Notes: Ronnigeria is characterised by rounded or broadly ellipsoidal ascomata, peridium comprising textura angularis, club-shaped asci broad at the top and elongated, and often club-like or spindle-shaped, hyaline ascospores. Ronnigeria is a distinct genus in Leptopeltidaceae but molecular data is lacking. Molecular markers are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
