Lepidopterella

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascocarps solitary, superficial to slightly immersed, globose to subglobose, black, nonostiolate. Peridium pseudoparenchymatic, several layered, brown to black. Asci bitunicate, globose to subglobose, stalked, thick-walled, lacking a subapical chamber, 8-spored. Ectoascus rigid, rupturing by an apical slit. Ascospores papilionaceous, z-celled, brown. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Shearer et al. 1980).

Notes: Lepidopterella is characterised by solitary, superficial to slightly immersed ascocarps, pseudoparenchymatic peridium, globose to subglobose asci, and papilionaceous, z-celled, brown ascospores. Shearer and Crane (1980) placed Lepidopterella in Argynnaceae. In the phylogenetic analyses of Shearer et al. (2009), L. palustris represents a basal taxon to Mytilinidiales. Lepidopterella resembles Argynna in having butterfly-shaped ascospores but can be differentiated in having globose to subglobose ascomata, and papilionaceous to broadly reniform, brown to orange-brown ascospores (Hyde et al. 2013). Lepidopterella is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Argynnaceae. Molecular markers available for Lepidopterella are ITS, LSU and SSU.
