Pseudoseptoria

Pseudoseptoria Speg., Anal. Mus. nac. B. Aires, Ser. 3 13: 388 (1910).

Index Fungorum number: IF 9614; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00134, 8 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data.

Pathogenic on plants. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium immersed, branched, septate, pale brown. Conidiomata pycnidial, solitary or linearly aggregated, immersed, brown, globose, unilocular; walls thin, of pale brown textura angularis. Ostiole distinct, central, circular. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells discrete, determinate or indeterminate, hyaline, smooth, ampulliform with a prominent cylindrical papilla with several percurrent proliferations at the apex. Conidia falcate, fusoid, acutely rounded at each end, hyaline, aseptate, guttulate, smooth, thin-walled (adapted from Sutton 1980, Quaedvlieg et al. 2013).

Type species: Pseudoseptoria donacicola Speg.

Notes: Pseudoseptoria is characterised by immersed, pale brown mycelium, solitary or linearly aggregated unilocular pycnidia with a thin conidiomatal wall comprising pale brown cells of textura angularis with a distinct, central, circular ostiole, discrete, determinate conidiogenous cells, and fusoid, hyaline, aseptate, guttulate conidia (Quaedvlieg et al. 2013; Sutton 1980). Wijayawardene et al. (2012) treated Pseudoseptoria in Ascomycota, genera incertae sedis. Quaedvlieg et al. (2013) added two new species, P. collariana and P. obscura and placed Pseudoseptoria in Dothioraceae based on phylogenetic analyses in which P. donacis (CBS 291.69, 313.68 and 417.51), the type species of Pseudoseptoria formed a monophyletic lineage with P. collariana and P. obscura. In the phylogenetic analyses of Thambugala et al. (2014), Pseudoseptoria formed a distinct clade in Aureobasidiaceae sister to Selenophoma linicola (CBS 468.48). Crous et al. (2017) placed Pseudoseptoria in Saccotheciaceae based on LSU sequence data. The fact that Aureobasidiaceae Thambug. & K.D. Hyde 2014 is an isonym of Aureobasidiaceae Cif. (Man. Mic. Med. 2nd edn, 1: 178, 1958), the precise name of the family comprising Aureobasidium and Saccothecium is the earlier name Saccotheciaceae (Liu et al. 2015). Hence, Pseudoseptoria is a distinct and well-supported genus in Saccotheciaceae. The ideal molecular markers to introduce or differentiate species of Pseudoseptoria are ITS, LSU and RPB2.
