Kabatiella

Kabatiella Bubák, Hedwigia 46: 297 (1907).

Index Fungorum number: IF 8656; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00103, 18 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 6 species with molecular data.

Subepidermal on leaves. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata sporodochia or acervuli, stromata, pale or pale brown. Conidiophores stromatic, unbranched, or branched, hyaline. Conidiogenous cells polyblastic synchronous, inconspicuous scars orndenticles, vesiculate, hyaline. Conidia clustered on swollen apex, borne on tiny sterigmata, aseptate, hyaline, oblong to cylindrical, conidial secession schizolytic (adapted from Bubák 1907; Seifert et al. 2011; Thambugala et al. 2014).

            Type species: Kabatiella microsticta Bubák

Notes: Hermanides-Nijhof (1977) and Sivanesan (1984) synonymized Kabatiella under Aureobasidium. Seifert et al. (2011) did not agree and treated Kabatiella and Aureobasidium as two distinct genera. In the phylogenetic analysis of Thambugala et al. (2014), Kabatiella formed a distinct lineage in Dothideales with strong statistical support. Thambugala et al. (2014) suggested that K. lini might belong to Aureobasidium as it clustered with Aureobasidium in their phylogenetic analysis, while K. microsticta and K. caulivora formed a lineage in Kabatiella. Kabatiella is a well-supported and distinct genus in Saccotheciaceae. Molecular markers available for Kabatiella are ITS, LSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
