Importance and distribution

Species of Sydowia are saprobic and help in decomposition of organic matter in the ecosystem. There are 18 Sydowia epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), but several species have been transferred to other genera such as Dothiora and Pseudosydowia. Sydowia comprises 11 species known on a wide range of plants such as Abies (Pinaceae), Cryptomeria japonica (Taxodiaceae), Eucalyptus sp. (Myrtaceae), Jasminum calophyllum (Oleaceae), Picea abies (Pinaceae), Prosopis juliflora (Fabaceae), Prunus sp. (Rosaceae), Randia dumetorum (Rubiaceae), Shepherdia canadensis (Elaeagnaceae) and Thuja plicata (Cupressaceae). Sydowia is reported from several countries such as Asia (India, Japan, Pakistan), Australia, Europe (Germany, Netherlands, Ukraine), North America (Canada), South Africa and the United States.
