Stylodothis

Stylodothis Arx & E. Müll., Stud. Mycol. 9: 11 (1975).

Index Fungorum number: IF 5299; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00091, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on bark and stems. Sexual morph: Ascostromata black, immersed, erumpent to superficial, solitary or scattered, gregarious, coriaceous, multiloculate, with four to numerous locules, cells of ascostromata composed of several layers of dark brown cells of textura angularis. Locules globose to subglobose, non-ostiolate. Peridium of locules a single layer heavily or lightly pigmented cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium lacking pseudoparaphyses. Asci 4–8-spored, bitunicate, clavate to cylindrical, pedicellate, rounded at the apex. Ascospores uni or biseriate, sometimes partially overlapping, yellowish-brown to dark brown, uniseptate, rarely 2 or 3-septate, constricted at the primary septum, upper cell wider, ellipsoid to fusiform, lower cell narrow and tapering to rounded base, smooth-walled, sometimes guttulate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Thambugala et al. 2014).

Type species: Stylodothis puccinioides (DC.) Arx & E. Müll.

Notes: Stylodothis is characterised by black, immersed, erumpent to superficial ascostromata, clavate to cylindrical, pedicellate asci, yellowish-brown to dark brown, uniseptate, rarely 2- or 3-septate ascospores. Schoch et al. (2006) reported that S. puccinioides is closely related to Dothidea. The phylogenetic analysis of Thambugala et al. (2014) was also in agreement with that of Schoch et al. (2006) who reported that Stylodothis belongs in Dothideaceae, but only one species has molecular data. Thambugala et al. (2014) reported cellular pseudo paraphyses which is unusual for this order Dothideales. It might be the species was observed at an early stage of development. More collections are needed for further clarification. Molecular markers available for Stylodothis are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
