Endoconidioma

Endoconidioma Tsuneda, Hambl. & Currah, Mycologia 96(5): 1129 (2004).

Index Fungorum number: IF 28876; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00080, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Dematiaceous asexual fungus. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata, forming on a black subiculum, subglobose to flask-shaped, consisting of an entirely closed, darkly pigmented peridium and a locule filled with conidiogenous cells. Endoconidia formed endogenously, hyaline, unicellular, released by dissolution of the conidiogenous and the peridial cells of the conidiomata. Blastic conidia mostly 2-celled, light to dark brown, produced holoblastically from pigmented, undifferentiated hyphae (adapted from Tsuneda 2004).

Type species: Endoconidioma populi Tsuneda, Hambl. & Currah

Notes: Endoconidioma is characterised by black subicula, globose to subglobose conidiomata, smooth, hyaline, unicellular, mostly ovoid to ellipsoid endoconidia, dark, melanized, septate hyphae and unicellular or 2-celled, brown, ovoid to ellipsoid, blastic conidia. Endoconidioma morphologically and phylogenetically belongs to Dothideaceae. ITS, LSU, SSU, ACT, BTUB, RPB2 and TEF-1 sequences are available for Endoconidioma.
