Importance and distribution

Species of Delphinella are saprobic or parasitic on the host. As parasites they may penetrate the host and obtain nutrients from the cytoplasm which causes wilting or sometimes death of the host plant (Miki et al. 2011). Delphinella comprises six species known on three host plants namely Abies sp. (Pinaceae), Pinus halepensis (Pinaceae), and Thuja plicata (Cupressaceae). It causes significant economic losses on Abies (Talgo et al. 2015). Delphinella has a wide geographical distribution including Europe (France, Greece, Norway, United Kingdom) and North America (Canada, the United States).
