Zwackhiomacromyces
Zwackhiomacromyces Etayo & van den Boom, Opuscula Philolichenum 13: 70 (2014).
Index Fungorum number: IF 803963; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08929, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Lichenicolous. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecioid, black, pyriform, with ostiole largely papilliform, granulose and opening radially. Ascomatal wall dark, composed of several layers of cells forming a pseudoparenchymatous texture the outermost with extracellular, sometimes granulose pigment. Hamathecium composed of branched and anastomosed pseudoparaphyses, lacking periphyses and periphysoids. Centrum I-. Asci elongate-clavate, fissitunicate, lateral thick-walled, apically thickened and with an ocular chamber. Ascospores ellipsoid, (2–)3-septate, hyaline, without a subapical germpore-like spot, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from van den Boom & Etayo 2014).
Type species: Zwackhiomacromyces constrictocarpus Etayo & van den Boom
Notes: Zwackhiomacromyces is characterised by black, pyriform perithecia, elongate-clavate asci and ellipsoid, (2–)3-septate, hyaline ascospores. Berger and Zimmerman (2016) transferred Pyrenidium hyalosporum found on Placopsis gelida to Zwackhiomacromyces based on ascomatal and ascospore characters. Zwackhiomacromyces differs from Zwackhiomyces which lacks ostiolar filaments and has mostlyuniseptate, asymmetric and hyaline ascospores while Zwackhiomacromyces has a papilliform, granulose ostiole that opens radially and (2–)3-septate, hyaline ascospores. Zwackhiomacromyces also resembles Rhagadostoma in having similar ascomatal wall and large ascospores but differs in that Rhagadostoma has large, evanescent cells in the pseudoparaphyses anduniseptate ascospores. Zwackhiomacromyces is also similar to Clauzadella, a parasymbiotic lichenicolous taxon found on thallus of Verrucaria viridula in having-septate, hyaline ascospores but differs in having a violet coloration in the thicker ascomatal wall and, particularly a different hamathecium structure comprising well-developed periphyses and periphysoids, but without pseudoparaphyses (Navarro-Rosinés & Roux 1996). Zwackhiomacromyces is a distinct genus in Xanthopyreniaceae but molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
