Simplicidiella

Simplicidiella Crous, Attili-Angelis, A.P.M. Duarte, Pagnocca & J.Z. Groenew., in Duarte, Attili-Angelis, Baron, Groenewald, Crous & Pagnocca, Persoonia 38: 87 (2016)

Index Fungorum number: IF 817414; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07036, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2021), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on integument of Atta capiguara gyne. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous. Mycelium consisting of septate, smooth-walled, pale brown hyphae. Conidiophores erect, solitary, poorly branched or unbranched. Conidiogenous cells elongate, aseptate, smooth-walled; scars not thickened, slightly darkened. Conidia catenate, in branched chains, 0–1-septate, smooth, ellipsoidal to broadly ellipsoidal with prominent hila (Adapted from Duarte et al. 2016).

Type species: Simplicidiella nigra A.P.M. Duarte & Attili-Angelis

Notes: Simplicidiella was introduced by Duarte et al. (2016) with S. nigra as type species. Simplicidiella is unique in producing catenate conidia in branched chains. Simplicidiella differs from Penidiella and other penidiella-like genera in lacking penicillate conidiophores with branches. Simplicidiella differs from Neopenidiella and Myrtapenidiella in being saprobic while the latter are foliicolous. Simplicidiella is associated with Atta capiguara gyne and differs from Eupenidiella which is associated with opportunistic human infections.
