Readeriella

Readeriella Syd. & P. Syd., Annls mycol. 6(5): 484 (1908).

Index Fungorum number: IF 9698; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07034, 22 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 22 species with molecular data.

Pathogenic on leaf. Leaf spots irregular to subcircular, medium brown to red-brown, margins raised. Mycelium internal, consisting of branched, septate, medium brown, smooth hyphae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata in vitro pycnidial, aggregated, globose to sub globose, wall of 4–6 layers of medium brown of textura angularis. Conidiophores hyaline, smooth, subcylindrical to doliiform or reduced to conidiogenous cells and ovoid, 0–1-septate. Conidiogenous cells doliiform to subcylindrical or ovoid, hyaline, smooth, mono- or polyphialidic, with prominent periclinal thickening. Conidia holoblastic, solitary, aseptate, pale to medium brown, finely verruculose, base subtruncate, apex flattened with three lateral, obtuse projections, deltoid (adapted from Crous et al. 2004).

Type species: Readeriella mirabilis Syd. & P. Syd.

Notes: Readeriella is a polyphyletic genus within Teratosphaeriaceae. Readeriella is unique in its conidial pigmentation, and the mode of conidiogenesis. Conidiogenous cells vary from mono- to polyphialides with periclinal thickening, to phialides with percurrent proliferation. Conidia are variable ranging from aseptate to multiseptate, smooth to rough with different synasexual morphs. Molecular markers available for Readeriella are ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, BTUB, Calmodulin, RPB2 and TEF-1.
