Phaeothecoidea

Phaeothecoidea Crous, in Crous et al., Fungal Diversity 26(1): 171 (2007).

Index Fungorum number: IF 501267; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07029, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 4 species with molecular data.

Pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Hyphae pale to medium brown, verruculose, 4–6 µm wide, end cells dividing into several endoconidia. Endoconidia pale to medium brown, verruculose, thick-walled, ellipsoid to obovoid, obclavate or irregularly triagular, becoming 1(–2) septate, medium to dark brown, verruculose to verrucose, giving rise to additional endoconidia (adapted from Crous et al. 2007).

Type species: Phaeothecoidea eucalypti Crous & Summerell

Notes: Phaeothecoidea is characterised by pale to medium brown, verruculose hyphae and enodoconidia, becoming 1(–2) septate, medium to dark brown on maturity. Crous et al. (2007) suggested the placement of Phaeothecoidea in Mycosphaerellaceae while Quaedvlieg et al. (2014) showed that Phaeothecoidea resides in Teratosphaeriaceae. Phaeothecoidea is a distinct and well-defined genus in Teratosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Phaeothecoidea include ITS, LSU, Actin, BTUB, Calmodulin, RPB2 and TEF-1.
