Muriphila

Micromorphology (on MEA). Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Hyphae dark olivaceous, moderately thick, with smooth occasionally verrucous walls. Hyphal cells rectangular to sub-spherical, occasionally asymmetrical, occasionally 1(–2) septa, at maturity hyphae falls apart into separate cells (adapted from Crous et al. 2020).

Notes: Muriphila is characterised by dark olivaceous, moderately thick hyphae with rectangular to sub-spherical, 1(–2)-septate hyphae. Muriphila is morphologically similar to Batcheloromyces and Devriesia which are meristematic rock-inhabiting fungi (Egidi et al. 2014). Muriphila also resembles Pseudotaeniolina and Meristemomyces in having similar ecology and morphology. Muriphila differs from Pseudotaeniolina in having larger hyphal cells. Muriphila produces rectangular to asymmetrical hyphal cells compared to Meristemomyces which forms pyriform or reniform hyphal cells. Muriphila also resembles Baudoinia in having similar ecology as the latter occur on outdoor surfaces near distilleries exposed to ethanolic vapors but both genera are phylogenetically distant. Crous et al. (2020) suggested a possible convergent evolution linked to adaptations to similar extreme environments. The systematic position of Muriphila within Teratosphaeriaceae is still uncertain as LSU and SSU sequence data do not have enough resolving power (Quaedvlieg et al. 2014). In the phylogenetic analyses of Crous et al. (2020) based on ITS and LSU sequence data, Muriphila is closely related to Batcheloromyces and Devriesia. More sequence data from other gene regions are required to confirm the systematic position of Muriphila. Molecular markers available for Muriphila are ITS and LSU.
