Friedmanniomyces

Friedmanniomyces Onofri, in Onofri et al., Nova Hedwigia 68(1-2): 176 (1999).

Index Fungorum number: IF 28325; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07010, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Associated with sandstone. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium composed of thick walled torulose hyphae showing polar growth by enteroblastic proliferation and branching by laterally enteroblastic protrusions, often embedded by extracellular polymeric substances; cells showing transverse septa are often present. Thick-walled single cells. At times cylindrical hyphae, 3–5 µm wide, characterised by thinner cell walls, usually connected with torulose hyphae. Conidia 1-celled, globose to subglobose, occasionally with truncate ends, dry, smooth and thick walled, brown, produced in branched or unbranched acropetal chains by enteroblastic proliferation of each previously formed cell, schizolytically seceding. Seldom two-celled conidia, elliptical are produced. At times multicellular conidia, slimy, acrogenous, smooth, thick-walled, brown, subglobose, very variable in shape and size (adapted from Onofri et al. 1999; Selbmann et al. 2005).

Type species: Friedmanniomyces endolithicus Onofri

Notes: Friedmanniomyces is characterised by thick-walled torulose hyphae, and globose to subglobose 1-celled conidia, sometimes two-celled conidia mostly elliptical, at times multicellular. Friedmanniomyces comprises two species reported from Antarctica. Friedmanniomyces is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Teratosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Friedmanniomyces are ITS and SSU.
