Euteratosphaeria
Euteratosphaeria Quaedvl. & Crous, in Quaedvlieg et al., Persoonia 33: 25 (2014).
Index Fungorum number: IF 807799; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07009, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Foliicolous, plant pathogenic. Sexual morph: Ascomata pseudothecial, solitary, black, immersed becoming erumpent, globose; ostiole apical, central; wall of 2–3 layers of medium brown textura angularis. Asci aparaphysate, fasciculate, bitunicate, subsessile, obovoid to narrowly ellipsoid, straight or slightly incurved, 8-spored. Ascospores tri- to multiseriate, overlapping, hyaline, guttulate, thin-walled, straight, ellipsoid with obtuse ends, medianlyuniseptate, tapering towards both ends, but more prominently towards the lower end. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Quaedvlieg et al. 2014).
Type species: Euteratosphaeria verrucosiafricana (Crous & M.J. Wingf.) Quaedvl. & Crous
Notes: Euteratosphaeria is characterised by pseudothecial, solitary, black, immersed to erumpent ascomata, obovoid to narrowly ellipsoid asci, and tri- to multiseriate, overlapping, hyaline, medianlyuniseptate ascospores. Euteratosphaeria resembles Teratosphaeria but can be differentiated in that the ascospores are brown and verruculose upon germination and germinate with more than two hyaline germ tubes and grow irregularly to the long axis of the ascospore. Euteratosphaeria is a distinct and well-supported genus in Teratosphaeriaceae. More collections of Euteratosphaeria are needed to confirm the morphological concept of the genus. Molecular markers available for Euteratosphaeria are ITS, LSU, Actin, BTUB, Calmodulin, RPB2 and TEF-1.
