Elasticomyces elasticus

Elasticomyces elasticus Zucconi & Selbmann, in Selbmann et al., Stud. Mycol. 61: 11 (2008).

Index Fungorum number: IF 511297; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11374, Fig. 1

Description: see Selbmann et al. (2008); Quaedvlieg et al. (2014).

Material examined: see Selbmann et al. (2008); Quaedvlieg et al. (2014).

Fig. 1 Elasticomyces elasticus (CBS 122538, re-drawn from Selbmann et al. 2008). a Vegetative hypha. b, c Branched fertile hyphae producing conidia by fragmentation. d Disarticulating fertile hyphae where cells remain joint by connectives. e Swelling hyphae. Scale bar = 20 µm.

Importance and distribution

Elasticomyces species are rock species or acidophilic and are successful colonizers even in nutrient-poor and dry habitats because of restricted competition with other organisms (Gorbushina 2007). Elasticomyces comprises only one species known on Usneae antarcticae (Parmeliaceae) in Antarctica.
