Index Fungorum number: IF 7477; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07001, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic or pathogenic on leaf. Sexual morph: Leaf spots amphigenous, irregular, dark brown to black, specks of 0.5 mm, coalescing to larger spots to 1 cm diam. Ascostromata amphigenous, predominantly epiphyllous, subcuticular, uni-to multi-locular, erumpent, solitary to aggregated with single, central, periphysate ostiole. Peridium comprising thick-walled cells of textura angularis; basal stroma on the epidermis comprising a single layer of brown, thick-walled cells. Interascal filaments pseudoparaphysoids, filamentous, branched, anastomosed, hyaline, indistinct, constricted at septa. Asci sessile, stipitate, obovoid, 8-spored, with well-developed apical chamber and multi layered endotunica. Ascospores fusoid-ellipsoid, hyaline, smooth, thick-walled, prominently constricted at septum, becoming pale brown in older asci. Asexual morph: Conidiomata acervular, amphigenous, subcuticular, epidermal to sub epidermal, separate or confluent, composed of dark brown, thick-walled, globose to angular cells, dehiscing irregularly at the apex, visible as small as black spots on superficial stromata. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells determinate, integrated, cylindrical to doliiform, hyaline to pale brown, smooth to finely verruculose, lining the conidiomatal cavity, minute periclinal thickening visible at apex. Conidia dictyoseptate, distoseptate with 3 transverse septa and 1–2 vertical or oblique septa, thick–walled, finely verruculose, irregular or clavate to obclavate with a broad truncate base (adapted from Crous et al. 2011).
Type species: Camarosporula persooniae (Henn.) Petr.
Notes: Camarosporula is characterised by solitary to aggregated ascostromata, thick-walled peridium comprising cells of textura angularis, obovoid asci and fusoid-ellipsoid hyaline ascospores. Crous et al. (2011) showed that Camarosporula is a distinct genus in Teratosphaeriaceae based on phylogenetic analyses of LSU and ITS sequences. The teleomorph genus Anthracostroma differs from other genera in Teratosphaeriaceae in having an ascomata located in a subcuticular stroma and asci intermixed among several pseudoparaphyses. Molecular markers available for Camarosporula include LSU, ITS and RPB2.
