Importance and distribution
Austrostigmidium comprises only one species and is commensalistic. Austrostigmidium interacts with its host Mastodia tessellate (Verrucariaceae) in Antarctica, but does not cause any deformations or galls in the host thallus (Hawksworth 1982).
