Aulographina

Aulographina Arx & E. Müll., Sydowia 14(1-6): 330 (1960).

Index Fungorum number: IF 460; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07645, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Epiphytes on pine needles, forming small, blackened areas. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia-like fruiting bodies superficial, scattered to gregarious, dark brown to black, carbonaceous, opening by a sunken, longitudinal or Y-shaped slit. Peridium comprising condensed hyphae. Hamathecium comprising numerous, filiform, flexuose pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindricclavate to clavate, with short, broad, rounded pedicel, apically rounded with a distinct ocular chamber. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, ellipsoid to fusiform or ovoid, with rounded ends, laterally compressed, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hongsanan et al. 2014).

Type species: Aulographina pinorum (Desm.) Arx & E. Müll.

Notes: Aulographina is characterised by scattered to gregarious, dark brown to black thyriothecia-like fruiting bodies, flexuose pseudoparaphyses, cylindric clavate to clavate asci, and ellipsoid to fusiform or ovoid ascospores. Aulographina resembles genera in Aulographaceae in having thyriothecia-like fruiting bodies opening by a longitudinal slit but differs in having pseudoparaphyses and clavate asci. In the phylogenetic analyses of Cheewangkoon et al. (2012) based on LSU and ITS sequence data, Aulographina eucalypti (CPC 12986) clusters within Teratosphaeriaceae. The sequence data of the type A. pinorum (CBS 174.90, 302.71) was obtained by Crous et al. (2009) and they produced the asexual morphic fungus Catenulostroma abietis in culture. Cheewangkoon et al. (2012) suggested that these two strains (CBS 174.90, 302.71) could have been mistaken for hysterothecia of A. pinorum and are unlikely to be authentic. Fresh specimen is needed to resolve the status of Aulographina and to check whether it is related to species of Alysidiella and available Aulographina eucalypti strains. We follow Hongsanan et al. (2020a) and retain Aulographina in Teratosphaeriaceae until more data comes to light.
