Arboricolonus S. Bien & Damm, MycoKeys 63: 130 (2020).
Index Fungorum number: IF 832106; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11362, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Colonies slow-growing, moist, white or buff colours on oatmeal agar medium, lacking aerial mycelium. Sporulation conidia formed on hyphal cells. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells enteroblastic, intercalary, reduced to short discrete phialides or, more often, collarettes formed directly on hyphal cells, collarettes short tubular to funnel-shaped. Conidia aggregated around the hyphae, small, hyaline, 1-celled, cylindrical, ovoidal to allantoid. Vegetative hyphae and phialides hyaline, smooth-walled, septate, branched (adapted from Bien and Damm 2020).
Type species: Arboricolonus simplex S. Bien & Damm
Notes: Arboricolonus is characterised by enteroblastic, intercalary conidiogenous cells, and small, hyaline, 1-celled conidia. Arboricolonus resembles members of Collophorina in having slow growing colonies without aerial mycelium, conidiogenous cells with short necks or openings with collarettes on hyphae but differs in that the latter genus has microcyclic conidiation which is lacking in Arboricolonus (Bien and Damm 2020). Arboricolonus is phylogenetically distinct from Collophorina as the latter belongs to Leotiomycetes. Arboricolonus is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Teratosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Arboricolonus include ITS, LSU and RPB2.
