Araucasphaeria

Araucasphaeria Crous & M.J. Wingf., in Crous et al., Persoonia 40: 335 (2018).

Index Fungorum number: IF 825397; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06991, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Ascomata pseudothecial, aggregated in a brown stroma, immersed to erumpent, globose, with central ostiole, filled with hyaline, branched, septate periphysoids; wall of 3–8 layers of dark brown textura angularis. Asci aparaphysate, fasciculate, bitunicate, subsessile, obovoid, straight to slightly curved, 8-spored. Ascospores multiseriate, overlapping, hyaline, guttulate, thick-walled, fusoid-ellipsoid with obtuse ends, medianlyuniseptate, encased in a mucoid sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Crous et al. 2018).

Type species: Araucasphaeria foliorum Crous & M.J. Wingf.

Notes: Araucasphaeria is characterised by pseudothecial, aggregated in a brown immersed to erumpent stroma, aparaphysate, obovoid, straight to slightly curved asci and multiseriate, overlapping, hyaline ascospores. Araucasphaeria resembles Pseudoteratosphaeria (Quaedvlieg et al. 2014) but differs in having ascomata grouped in a stroma, ostioles that are filled with hyaline, branched, septate periphysoids, and ascospores surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Araucasphaeria is a distinct and well-supported genus in Teratosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Araucasphaeria are LSU and ITS.
