Sinodidymella

Sinodidymella J.Z. Yue & O.E. Erikss., Mycotaxon 24: 295 (1985).

Index Fungorum number: IF 25734; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08371, 5 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata medium to large, scattered, or in small groups, immersed, erumpent, to superficial, globose, subglobose, coriaceous, apex flattened, with radial ridges arranged around the central region. Peridium thick, 2-layered. Hamathecium of dense, broadly trabeculate pseudoparaphyses, anastomosing and branching between the asci. Asci 8-spored, with a short, furcate pedicel, bitunicate, cylindrical. Ascospores broadly ellipsoid, hyaline, becoming pale brown when mature, uniseptate, constricted at the median septum. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zhang et al. 2012).

Type species: Sinodidymella verrucosa (Petr.) J.Z. Yue & O.E. Erikss.

Notes: Sinodidymella is characterised by globose or subglobose ascomata, cylindrical asci, and broadly ellipsoid hyaline to pale brown ascospores. Sinodidymella is unique in having radial ridges on ascomata, which has been compared with Lophiostoma rugulosum but differs in having broadly trabeculate pseudoparaphyses compared to the “tightly aggregated cellular pseudoparaphyses” and “apically ending into bunches of clavate cells” of Lophiostoma rugulosum. Sinodidymella was previously suggested to be a member of the Melanommataceae. Wijayawardene et al. (2018) included Sinodidymella within Teichosporaceae. The taxonomic placement of Sinodidymella needs to be verified by molecular data.
