Pseudomisturatosphaeria

Pseudomisturatosphaeria Thambug. & K.D. Hyde, in Thambugala et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-015-0348-3, [53] (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551275; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00838, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on decorticated woody branches. Sexual morph: Ascomata usually single or rarely clustered in small groups, erumpent, dark brown, pyriform to globose, ostiolate. Ostiole rounded, papillate, usually raised. Hamathecium comprising 1–2 μm wide, numerous, septate, branching, anastomosing, cellular pseudo paraphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical-clavate, with a short pedicel, rounded at the apex, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores partially bi-seriate to sometimes overlapping uniseriate, hyaline when immature, becoming brown to dark brown when mature, oblong to elliptical, muriform, usually constricted at the central transverse septum, smooth-walled, lacking a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Mugambi & Huhndorf 2009).

Type species: Pseudomisturatosphaeria cruciformis (Mugambi & Huhndorf) Thambugala & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Pseudomisturatosphaeria is characterised by erumpent, dark brown, pyriform to globose ascomata, and hyaline brown to dark brown muriform ascospores lacking a mucilaginous sheath. Pseudomisturatosphaeria cruciformis was previously known as Misturatosphaeria cruciformis and introduced by Mugambi and Huhndorf (2009). Pseudomisturatosphaeria differs from Misturatosphaeria in that the latter has sparse, brown subiculum, an orange ostiolar area and fusiform, frequently slightly curved, hyaline to brown or dark brown, 3-septate, rough-walled ascospores, enclosed in a mucilaginous sheath (Mugambi & Huhndorf 2009). In the phylogenetic analysis of Thambugala et al. (2015), the species M. cruciformis formed a distinct lineage sister to Asymmetrispora hence was accommodated in the new genus Pseudomisturatosphaeria. Pseudomisturatosphaeria differs from members of Asymmetrispora in having ascomata typically occurring singly and oblong to elliptical, symmetrical, dictyosporous ascospores with 5–7-transverse septa. Pseudomisturatosphaeria is a distinct and well-defined genus in Teichosporaceae. Only LSU sequence data is available for M. cruciformis in GenBank.
