Magnibotryascoma
Magnibotryascoma Thambug. & K.D. Hyde, in Thambugala et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-015-0348-3, [51] (2015).
Index Fungorum number: IF 551266; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00835, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 4 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on dead branches. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary, or aggregated in large clusters, erumpent, pyriform to subglobose, dark brown, ostiolate, ostiolar area often lighter. Ostiole central, rounded, slightly raised, papillate, with a porelike opening. Hamathecium comprising 1–2 μm wide, numerous, branched, septate, hyaline, cellular pseudoparaphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to cylindrical-clavate, pedicellate, rounded at the apex, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores uniseriate, partially overlapping, brown to dark brown, fusiform to elliptical, usually 1–3-septate, but commonly 3-septate, constricted at the septa, guttulate, smooth-walled, lacking a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Mugambi & Huhndorf 2009).
Type species: Magnibotryascoma uniseriatum (Mugambi, A.N. Mill. & Huhndorf) Thambugala & K.D. Hyde
Notes: Magnibotryascoma is characterised by solitary, or aggregated ascomata, fissitunicate, cylindrical to cylindrical-clavate asci and partially overlapping, brown to dark brown, fusiform to elliptical, usually 1–3-septate ascospores. Magnibotryascoma is phylogenetically related to Neocurreya but differs in having erumpent to superficial ascomata, with short bulbous openings and uniseriate, partially overlapping, fusiform to elliptical, 3-septate, guttulate ascospores. Jaklitsch et al. (2016b) synonymized Magnibotryascoma under Teichospora. Magnibotryascoma differs from Teichospora in having brown to fusiform, elliptical, 1–3-septate, ascospores, while T. trabicola has muriform ascospores with or without a slight constriction at the septa (Jaklitsch et al. 2016b). In the phylogenetic analysis of Hongsanan et al. (2020a), all Magnibotryascoma taxa formed a lineage distant from Teichospora species and they treated Magnibotryascoma as a separate genus in Teichosporaceae. Hongsanan et al. (2020a) also reported that Magnibotryascoma mali formed an independent lineage sister to Macrodiplodiopsis desmazieri. Magnibotryascoma mali however differs from Macrodiplodiopsis desmazieri in having superficial, globose conidiomata, enteroblastic, phialidic conidiogenous cells and unicellular, reddish-brown conidia, compared to M. desmazieri which possess immersed conidioma, annellidic conidiogenous cells, and 3-distoseptate conidia (Wijayawardene et al. 2014, Hongsanan et al. 2020a). In-depth analysis and revision of Magnibotryascoma mali and other species are needed to resolve the systematic position of Magnibotryascoma. Molecular markers available for Magnibotryascoma are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
