Loculohypoxylon

Loculohypoxylon M.E. Barr, Mycotaxon 3(3): 326 (1976).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2915; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08370, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascocarps numerous, immersed in inner periderm of host and forming widely effused, reddish brown to blackened patches; ascocarps perithecioid, immersed or widely erumpent, small, frequently darkened and thicker-walled over upper sides as a shallow clypeus, peridium thin and light brown below. Asci bitunicate, oblong or clavate, short stipitate, 4- or 8-spored, arising from base and lower sides of locule, in narrow cellular pseudoparaphyses. Ascospores one-celled, light to dark brown, broadly elliptic or subglobose, symmetric, often apiculate at both ends, apparent germ slit throughout length, wall smooth, overlapping uniseriate or partially 2-seriatein upper part of ascus. Asexual morph: unknown (adapted from Barr 1976).

Type species: Loculohypoxylon grandineum (Berk. & Ravenel) M.E. Barr

Notes: Loculohypoxylon is characterised by numerous ascomata immersed in inner periderm of host, oblong or clavate 4- or 8-spored asci and light to dark brown, broadly ellipsoidal or subglobose ascospores. The asexual morph is unknown. Wijayawardene et al. (2018) included Loculohypoxylon in Teichosporaceae. Molecular data is lacking for the genus. Fresh collections and DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus. The placement of Loculohypoxylon is currently doubtful but treated as a distinct genus in Teichosporaceae until further confirmation.
