Asymmetrispora

Asymmetrispora Thambug. & K.D. Hyde, in Thambugala et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-015-0348-3, [49] (2015).

Index Fungorum number: IF 551259; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00833, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead branches. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary, scattered, or in small groups, semi-immersed or erumpent to nearly superficial, coriaceous to carbonaceous, dark brown to black, globose to subglobose or pyriform, with rounded to conical opening. Ostiole central, rounded, usually raised, papillate. Peridium thick at the apex, thinner at the base, comprising two cell types, outer layer composed of small heavily pigmented, thick-walled, compressed cells, inner layer thin, composed of smaller, hyaline cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising 1–2 μm wide, numerous, septate, cellular pseudoparaphyses, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to cylindro-clavate, with a short pedicel, rounded at the apex, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores uni to bi-seriate, partially overlapping, pale to dark brown, fusiform to broadly clavate, with somewhat tapering lower end, 3-septate or muriform, asymmetrical, usually constricted at the central septum, smooth-walled, lacking a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: see Silva et al. (2022) (adapted from Mugambi & Huhndorf 2009, Zhang et al. 2013).

Type species: Asymmetrispora tennesseensis (Mugambi, A.N. Mill. & Huhndorf) Thambugala & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Asymmetrispora is characterised by solitary, scattered ascomata, cylindrical to cylindro-clavate asci and pale to dark brown, fusiform to broadly clavate 3-septate or muriform ascospores. In the phylogenetic analysis of Thambugala et al. (2015), Asymmetrispora mariae clustered with A. tennesseensis in a distinct lineage. Thambugala et al. (2015) placed Asymmetrispora in Floricolaceae based on phylogenetic analyses. Asymmetrispora mariae and A. tennesseensis were formerly known as Misturatosphaeria tennesseensis and M. mariae, respectively but not congeneric with the type species of Misturatosphaeria, M. aurantiacinotata. Asymmetrispora differs from Misturatosphaeria in having semi-immersed to erumpent, globose to pyriform ascomata, lacking a subiculum, and pale to dark brown, fusiform to broadly clavate, muriform, smooth-walled, ascospores without a mucilaginous sheath (Mugambi & Huhndorf 2009, Zhang et al. 2013). Jaklitsch et al. (2016) synonymized Asymmetrispora under Teichospora and considered T. trabicola as type species. According to Hongsanan et al. (2020a), Asymmetrispora is phylogenetically distinct to Teichospora species and was treated as a distinct genus in Teichosporaceae. Fresh collections are needed to confirm the taxonomic relationship of Asymmetrispora and to confirm whether the two species A. mariae and A. tennesseensis are distinct species. Molecular markers to differentiate or identify species of Asymmetrispora are ITS, LSU, SSU and TEF1.
