Metathyriella

Metathyriella Syd., Annls mycol. 25(1/2): 96 (1927).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3146; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07047, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytic on Crataegus crenulata. Sexual morph: Ascomata thyriothecial, scattered, scutate or hemisphaerical, with indistinct basal membrane, plane-convex, completely closed, irregularly lumpy at the maturity, transparent, yellowish-brown or olive-brown. Hamathecium composed of dense, filiform, branched, reticulate paraphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, broadly ellipsoid to ovoid, sessile. Ascospores overlapping parallel uniseriate, hyaline, oblong-clavate, 2-septate, moderate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Sydow 1927, Phookamsak et al. 2016).

Type species: Metathyriella roupalae Syd.

Notes: Metathyriella is characterised by scutate or hemisphaerical ascomata, broadly ellipsoid to ovoid asci, and oblong-clavate, 2-septate ascospores. Sydow (1927) reported that Metathyriella might be related to Clypeolum but differs in that the latter has multiseptate ascospores. Sydow (1927) treated the genus in Hemisphaeriaceae, but Arx and Müller (1975) transferred the genus to Schizothyriaceae based on hyaline, oblong-clavate, 2-septate ascospores. This treatment was followed by several authors (Arx & Müller 1975, Eriksson & Hawksworth 1985, Kirk et al. 2001, 2008; Lumbsch & Huhndorf 2010; Hyde et al. 2013; Hongsanan et al. 2020). Metathyriella is a distinct genus in Schizothyriaceae but lacks molecular data. DNA sequence data is needed to confirm the correct taxonomic placement of the genus.
