Amazonotheca

Amazonotheca Bat. & H. Maia, in Batista, Publicações Inst. Micol. Recife 56: 408 (1959).

Index Fungorum number: IF 155; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01943, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytic on leaves of Santiria nitida and Neea madeirana. Sexual morph: Mycelium lacking. Ascomata scattered, solitary, superficial, dark brown, plane, shield-shaped, orbicular, glabrous, uniloculate, translucent, membranous, lacking ostioles. Peridium thin-walled, poorly-developed at the base, composed of hyaline, prosenchymatous cells. Hamathecium forming cellular, paraphyses-like filaments, filiform, branched, septate. Asci 4–8-spored, bitunicate, subglobose to ovoid, sessile, apically rounded. Ascospores overlapping, brown, subcylindrical, 2- septate, constricted at the septum, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Batista 1959).

Type species: Amazonotheca santiriae Bat. & H. Maia

Notes: Amazonotheca comprises epiphytic species having brown, 2-septate ascospores. Amazonotheca differs from other genera in Schizothyriaceae in having anastomosing, cellular pseudoparaphyses and a peridium of prosenchymatous cells. Phookamsak et al. (2016) excluded Amazonotheca from Schizothyriaceae and transferred it Dothideomycetes, genera incertae sedis. Wijayawardene et al. (2018) tentatively reestablished the genus in Schizothyriaceae. Fresh collections and sequence data are needed to resolve the taxonomic placement of Amazonotheca.
