Alloscorias

Alloscorias Haituk & Cheew., in Haituk et al., Phytotaxa 507(4): 276 (2021).

Index Fungorum number: IF 27576; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11068, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Epiphytic on the surface of living leaves. Thallus very thin, superficial, pale brown to brown walls. Sexual morph: Ascomata gregarious to scattered, superficial, globose to subglobose, brown to dark brown, with indistinct ostiole. Setae abundant, corniform, brown, septate, constricted at septa, smooth-walled. Peridium composed of two sections, arranged in textura angularis, outer layer of brown to dark brown, thick-walled cells, inner layer of light brown, thin-walled cells. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, obpyriform, rounded at the apex, sessile. Ascospores overlapping 2–3-seriate, hyaline, smooth-walled, fusoid, narrowly rounded at the ends, 3–4-septate, upper cells wider and shorter than lower cells, constricted at the septa, with a conspicuous mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Mycelium pale brown to brown at the apex, septate, constricted at septa, rough, thick-walled. Coelomycetous. Conidiomata solitary, brown to dark brown, globose to subglobose. Pycnidial walls composed of pseudoparenchymatous cells of textura angularis, outer layer brown to dark brown, thick-walled cells, inner layer with hyaline, thin-walled cells. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells enteroblastic, phialidic, integrated, terminal, hyaline, smooth-walled. Conidia oblong to ellipsoid, hyaline, aseptate, guttulate, smooth-walled (Adapted from Haituk et al. 2021).

Type species: Alloscorias syngonii Haituk & Cheew.

Notes: Alloscorias is characterised by gregarious to scattered, superficial, globose to subglobose ascomata, bitunicate, obpyriform asci and hyaline, smooth-walled, fusoid ascospores. In a multigene analysis of LSU, ITS, TEF-1α and RPB2, Alloscorias formed a distinct lineage in Readerielliopsidaceae, closely related to Scorias (Haituk et al. 2021). Alloscorias resembles other members of Readerielliopsidaceae in having superficial, globose to pyriform pycnidia and hyaline or pale brown conidia. Alloscorias syngonii resembles Scorias spongiosa in having globose to subglobose, brown to dark brown ascomata and hyaline ascospores but differs in having setae on the thallus and ascospores with a mucilaginous sheath (Haituk et al. 2021). Alloscorias syngonii also differs from S. spongiosa in having globose conidiomata while the latter has flask-shape conidiomata. Alloscorias also resembles Trichopeltis (Trichopeltinaceae) in having transverse septate ascospores but differs in having a mucilaginous sheath (Hongsanan et al. 2014; Haituk et al. 2021). Alloscorias is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Readerielliopsidaceae. Molecular markers available include LSU, ITS and RPB2.
