Paracercospora

Paracercospora Deighton, Mycol. Pap. 144: 47 (1979)

Index Fungorum number: IF F 9206; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08534, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2021), 1 species with molecular data.

Phytopathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium in vivo internal. Conidiophores macronematous, fasciculate, pigmented. Conidiogenous cells integrated, terminal or conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells, conidiogenous loci subconspicous by being circular with very slightly thickened and darkened-refractive rim. Conidia solitary, scolecosporous, subhyaline to very pale olivaceous, hila very slightly thickened and darkened-refractive along the rim (Adapted from Braun et al. 2013).

Type species: Paracercospora egenula (Syd.) Deighton

Notes: Paracercospora was introduced by Deighton (1979) with P. egenula as type species. Paracercospora is characterized by having conidiogenous loci unthickened and not darkened and conidia solitary, subhyaline to pale olivaceous. Paracercospora resembles Pseudocercospora in having circular conidiogenous loci (scars) with a slightly thickened dark rim. Paracercospora also resembles Passalora in having pale olivaceous, catenate conidia, prominent, thickened, darkened scars but can be differentiated based on DNA sequence data. Crous and Braun (2003) synonymized Paracercospora with Pseudocercospora. Later, with the recollection of the type species P. egenula, Paracercospora was showed to be phylogenetically distinct from Pseudocercospora (Crous et al. 2013a, Vaghefi et al. 2016). Braun et al. (2013) maintained Paracercospora as a separate genus based on the combination of its phylogenetic position.
